Monitoring a server that you can't ping

I am monitoring a server for that sits in a data center that does not allow ping.  I am able to do service checks on all the devices, but once a device fails and the server is pinged, the server will continually show as "down" even though all services are up.  What can I do for this situation?

If this has been asked before, I appologize for the redundancy.  I wasn't even sure what to search on for this problem.
