Cannot open pipe: /bin/ping

If the Nagios server is running on Linux, you might want to set the
following in /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

   echo setting tcp_keepalive_time
   echo 360 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_keepalive_time

(assuming your installation has a larger value before you tamper with it.)
