More Infos: CGI - 500 - Premature end of script headers

Have you tried using the sample config files? I had this type of error before and it was due to a typo in the config files(nagios doesn't seem to check very well), if you haven't had nagios up and running for the first time I'd start from scratch and use the sample files(ie, hosts.cgf-sample), without any changes to verify the cfgs are good. Just change the 
use_authentication=1  and verify all your paths/permissions.

a trobleshoter from the FAQ says - but what is the problem?

I've used default values during install - so my cgi.cfg looks like this

I've read documentation and FAQ but can't fix the problem.
I've googled and found an article

that reports problems with mod_php 4.2.3. 

I've mod_php 4.2.3 installed on one box - the other has an older version
- but I've the same problem on both.

Hi group,

nagios is running and working but _all_ the CGIs from the web-interface
gave 500.
i.e.:
Premature end of script headers: /usr/local/nagios/sbin/tac.cgi
Premature end of script headers: /usr/local/nagios/sbin/status.cgi
Premature end of script headers: /usr/local/nagios/sbin/statuswrl.cgi
Premature end of script headers: /usr/local/nagios/sbin/outages.cgi
...

FAQ @ http://www.nagios.org/faqs/viewfaq.php?faq_id=43
says to "Recompile the CGIs without debugging enabled and this problem
should disappear." 

But I have not compiled with debug options - here's my configure:

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/nagios --with-cgiurl=/nagios/cgi-bin
--with-htmurl=/nagios --with-nagios-user=nagios --with-nagios-grp=nagios

My httpd.conf is extended with
--
ScriptAlias /nagios/cgi-bin/ /usr/local/nagios/sbin/

AllowOverride AuthConfig
Options ExecCGI
Order allow,deny
Allow from all


Alias /nagios/ /usr/local/nagios/share/

Options None
AllowOverride AuthConfig
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
