try using a quicker check.
either add "-p 1" to the check_ping macro to limit the check to 1 packet
rather than the default 5 or use check_tcp to check your hosts.

Subject: [Nagios-users] Load skyrockets?
I have over 300 services being checked with a ping check... pretty
simple.
But recently this is absolutely killing the machine... with the load of
the server... a PentiumII500 with 400mb ram, is hitting loads of 30-40
for brief periods....
Is there any way to optimise Nagios ping checks to keep the load down a
bit.... the machine pretty much becomes useless for other things when
this load gets soooo high.
...Skeeve
