Isn't the "!" in the response an error? Will the data following it be
considered performance data even if the return value isn't "OK"?

That's weird. I'm having the same problem. Check this:
$ ../libexec/check_udp -H ml15 -p 53
No data was recieved from host!
No response from host on port 53
And now check this:
$ ../libexec/check_dns -H ml15
DNS ok - 0 seconds response time, Address(es) is/are 10.108.56.15
Wild speculation, but it looks like check_udp is aB0rken.
