More than one Nagios Instance ?

How does this happens ?
 
This is the output  from a ps

nagios    4447  0.0  0.1  2808 1824 ?        S    16:18   0:00 /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
nagios    4736  0.0  0.1  2812 1828 ?        S    16:19   0:00 /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg


sometimes we have 20 or more, but they also disapears. Is this behavior normal ?
We also seems to loose notifications from time to time.
