check tcp garbage output

This is from the check_tcp plugin running Red Hat ES 3.0.

TCP OK - 0.000 second response time on port 20001

/opt/nagios/libexec/check_tcp --version
check_tcp (nagios-plugins 1.4.0alpha1) 1.37

I'm guessing this as something to do with the character set being
en_US.UTF-8, but maybe somebody else has tracked this down already.

Any ideas?
