newbie stuff?

I'm having a problem with the nagios.lock file.  It complains that it's not there.  I made the file with nothing in it (As I understand it, it's supposed to be auto-propagated with the current Nagios PID) to see if that would kick-start it, but then it complains that it can't do a "ps -p" without a PID.  Paul?  Anybody?
