[PMX:#] Disabled hosts - why?

I am building a new Nagios server (my first) using Nagios 1.2. 
I'm also using NagMIN 2.2.0 as a front-end to manage the config.

Whenever I add a new host it is added with host checks 
disabled, which isn't what I want at all.  How do ensure that 
host checks are enabled for the host when I add it?  I have 
host checks enabled in my generic host template.
