I haven't done a detailed analysis, and to be honest I didn't see huge
problems with any of the implementations. I just didn't think that any of
them were obviously better than any other for _every_ purpose. But each
one had unique advantages, which is why I suspect each rolled their own.

Frankly, I was first going to see if I could even get agreement on the idea
and see where that went. If nobody else has the time, I'm willing to throw
some significant time into this. But first I wanted to see where everyone
was as a starting point.
