check_tcp in the presence of tcp wrappers

I have a check_telnet command defined as

    $USER1$/check_tcp -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -p 23

(I don't recall if it's part of Nagios or NagMIN or something I chucked in
there.)

In the presence of tcp wrappers this seems like a pretty useless check,
since I might successfully get to port 23 but not get past the wrappers to
the real telnet daemon. I tried something like

    check_tcp -H host -p 23 -e "login:"

or

    check_tcp -H host -p 23 -s "" -e "login:"

but these both just hang. What send/expect chit chat should I use to
determine that I actually received a login prompt?

Thanks,
