I guess I have to probably re-compile nagios with the new setting. Does that sound right to you?

Xodtemplate.h is the one you need. xedtemplate.h is for extended data
files, xodtemplate.h is for object data files.
[root at gemini xdata]# pwd
/usr/local/src/nagios-1.1/xdata
[root at gemini xdata]# ls -l xodtemplate.h
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nagios nagios 15887 Oct 2 16:50 xodtemplate.h
[root at gemini xdata]# grep MAX_XODTEMPLATE_INPUT_BUFFER xodtemplate.h
#define MAX_XODTEMPLATE_INPUT_BUFFER 49152
