Host State Breakdowns

I was wondering, why sometimes do the hosts listed in the host state 
breakdowns  have 100% undetermined time, sometimes 50/50 undetermined or 
otherwise, and sometimes 98%uptime, 1% downtime, and 1%  unknown?  These 
hosts are set up exactly the same in the config files but i don't 
understand why i'm seeing such a high amount of undetermined  host 
states in the breakdown.  I'm not seeing any other errors elsewhere in 
nagios  besides the normal host up/down statuses.
