Authentication debugging?

I'm having problems on a new nagios server with authentication. It's
somewhat annoying, because the only indication of an error, is after I
login, any page I go to gives me this error :
-----------------------
It appears as though you do not have permission to view information for
any of the services you requested...
If you believe this is an error, check the HTTP server authentication
requirements for accessing this CGI
and check the authorization options in your CGI configuration file.
------------------------
I also notice that the box in the top-left corner which usually reads
"logged in as michael" reads "logged in as ?" ..
Is there a way to make nagios dump more useful information than this?
