My apologies, it was late and my math was off. It was a simple problem with diagnosing the difference between bytes and bits :) The shape of the MRTG and the nagiostat charts were the same, the numbers were actually off by a factor of 8. So sorry!

I was also kind of asking because nagiostat has a default regex that doesn't match the output of any plugin I've seen, but it looks for the same basic data. That plugin reponds in bits. In our case, I just modified yours to multiply by 8 and we're all happy.

I'm still interested in other ways to approach the problem, though! Particularly any way to do it with SNMPv3, which I see check_iftraffic doesn't support. Thanks!
