check_ifoperstatus & cisco 2620

I have an oddity that I don't understand and hope that someone knows the
answer. I have several routers that I use check_ifoperstatus on. On two
of them the router will stop responding to snmp requests on one
interface, but will respond to snmp polling on the another interface. ie
initially set to poll the serial interface, life is good and everything
is green. A week goes by and Nagios starts squawking. Doing an snmpwalk
from the command line, the serial interface times out, but the Ethernet
interface does not. Switch the interfaces in Nagios and everything is
back to green. A week later Nagios is squawking again. Do another
snmpwalk. Serial responds but Ethernet does not. Does anyone know what
is going on here and how to fix it?
Thanks, Bob
