Disable checks for host

Hi all,

By using Nagios 1.2, how it's possible to disable all checks for host ?

i try to use "checks_enabled 0" on the host's definitions but it doesn't
work!
all services for host are always checked !

Why ?
How it's possible to disable check quickly without remove host from
definition of each service ?
