I know this isn't a direct response to your question but I googled for
Nagios and Novell and the first hit was

To answer your question more directly, there is check_nwstat that'll
give your more system level information --
http://www.nagios.org/faqs/viewfaq.php?faq_id=31. It doesn't use NCP
but
it's more than a basic ping check. Also interesting is that mrtgext,
that check_nwstat uses, is now hosted by Novell and is cited
specifically for use with Nagios --

It's nice to see Novell giving Nagios some attention.
