NRPE and service dependencies

I have run into an issue with Nagios where occassionally NRPE occurs a
timeout, but the host is still ping-able, so I'll receive (# of
hosts)*(# of NRPE services) for just a blip in the network.
First thing that came to one would be to create a "NRPE check" service
that verifies that NRPE is responding. Works, BUT from what I
understand in the documentation, I will need to create a *huge* list of
service dependencies... (# of hosts)*(# of NRPE services), which will be
a management nightmare.
Has anyone else dealt with this issue? Any thoughts?
Thanks for your time,
