I had the exact same problem two days ago, and after suffering for hours
I found the answer was the SSL, you can compile nrpe with or without
support for it, and the plugin uses it for default, you must add a -n to
the command in order to tell the nagios machine to tell it not to use
it. So:
command_line $USER1$/check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c $ARG1$ -n
try this.
