Picking a freshness_threshold

Is there documentation somewhere on how to pick your freshness_threshold?
I've been through docs/freshness.html, but it doesn't seem clear.
I'm working with a pair of distributed nodes and we're getting
intermittent problems with stale check warnings from either of the nodes
every couple days. We are completing about 75% of our checks in 5 minutes,
so I've bumped the freshness_threshold up to 600 and am now waiting to see
if I get the stale warnings again.
I see that if I don't specify a threshold, nagios will set one for you.
How smart is that auto-selection, and is there a way that I can see what
it sets it to, if I want to give it a try?
Thanks,
