problems with distributed monitoring

I just went thru the same task (setting DM up) The thing that got me was
if you load Nagios and run it, then stop and conver to DM you have all
sorts of headaches.  Reason:  history/retension - stop nagios - go to
../var and do "> nagios.log" - zero it out.  And every other .log, and
archive. Then restart Nagios.  See if things don't run a little better.
