Why we need a check_period at hosts?

Hi Readers around!
Looking and searching in the docu gives me absolut no idea why I need a
check_period at the host definition. The check_command is not required,
but the strange _not documented_ check_period.
So I could imagine, that the check_period determines, when the host gets
checked. Is that right?
Regards; Stephan
