trouble with latency

I'm assuming that you have run the following command:
/path/to/nagios/bin/nagios -s /path/to/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
Because you mention the recommended value for max_concurrent_checks.

However, this will will also give you information about how
max_concurrent_checks and service_reaper_frequency are related to
latency. If the reaper frequency is set too high, or max concurrent is
too low, you can end up with latency issues.

You'll have to play around with different values until you find
something that works. I recently added about 1500 service checks, and
also raised my max concurrent checks value to about 150. I ended up with
about 11 seconds of check latency. So, I've since dropped my reaper
frequency to 3 seconds (from 5) and dropped concurrent checks to 60. So
far, this is working out well. My recommended min/max concurrent checks
are 2 & 6.
