Performance capacities of nagios 2.0b1

All,

I have implemented nagios2 as an upgrade from our 1.2 installation.
Initially we had very good performance stats.

But it has deteroriated with the additon of ~ 100 checks. Please let me know
if
There are any options I can tune in the nagios.cfg to improve things. 

<= 1 minute: 35 (1.2%) 
<= 5 minutes: 309 (10.8%) 
<= 15 minutes: 696 (24.4%) 
<= 1 hour: 2671 (93.8%) 
Since program start:   777 (27.3%)
