How to check Nagios itself??

I use Monit on a number of my servers, including my Nagios boxen.

It's basically a web interface to make sure that a given process is actually running. It can interact with init scripts, and so forth, and even gives you some basic statistical information.
It's not fancy, but it's effective.

Do NOT do this. If you for some reason want to turn nagios off or
reconfigure it and make a mistake, you won't be able to stop it at all,
and it might respawn too fast so that init disables it altogether.
