How to check Nagios itself??

I said it was a cheap hack. ;]

If you have a different process monitor (ie: Daemontools, Monit, or
even CFEngine) I'd make one of them a child of init to ensure they are
always running, and use them to ensure that nagios is up when needed.

In case you use the cheap hack, don't forget, if init does catch it
respawning too fast (failing to load) , it will log it to syslog and
only disable it for 5 minutes before trying again. It doesn't stop
permanently. You do read your logs right? ;]

Secondly, if you really needed to take it down for a bit and you don't
want init respawning it, remove the executable bit on the nagios
binary. Add it back when you're done and it'll come up within five
minutes.

All that being said, the above behavior works for Linux, I'm not sure
about other flavors. (And don't manually edit inittab on AIX!)
