Running the host-check manually? If you mean running the check from the command-line, then yes, I did. It worked fine from the CLI. I guess I'll try upgrading to 2.0b2, and see if it continues to be a problem.
Could there be another factor at play though, I wonder?

Did you try running the hostcheck manually? If so, what did it return?
If it worked out ok, you've found a bug in nagios and should try
upgrading to get rid of it.
