Apart from the embedded perl thingie. The last workaround I saw for its 
memory leakage was nothing short of horrid (it involved calling the 
init-script....).

Funny you should mention that, as the "stable" 1.4 release of the 
plugins (which are fairly simple to test) was riddled with bugs, while 
nagios (which is extremely difficult to test extensively) seems 
rock-stable in comparison.
