Adding New Hosts

I finally got my Nagios working but with the sample files, but still it is working. I do now have another issue. How do I put hosts and also what to check for within those hosts? I put some hosts into the minimal.cfg file but if I am reading it correctly it is not working. Is this the correct file to place the hosts and also checks for the hosts. Thank You;Eddie
