OS State Plugins?

I was just talking with my co-worker about the need for us to go through
and apply our weekly set of patches and it dawned on me that there
should be a plugin for nagios to report back the patch state of a machine.
Granted, it would vary widely depending on the OS, but there is usually
a command that can be issued that will report back what installed
packages are out of date. A VERY simple threshold could be simply a
line count (OK - if less than 10 packages need upgrading, WARN - 10 to
20 pkgs, CRIT - more than 20). It could obviously be more robust if the
OS would report the "criticality" of
the patches.
Another bit of info that should be easily obtainable via nagios would be
the OS version via uname. I can see where that would be handy to have
on the "Service State Details" page.
I checked nagiosexchange, but didn't see any plugins like these...does
anyone know if they exist?
..or do I have another "spare time" project?
...or is this another one of my "dumb ideas?" :-)
Thanks,
Emmett
