NC_NET / Windows 2003 / MSSQLSERVER - not recognized

Has anyone run into a problem with NC_NET not being able to see running
SQL processes on Windows 2003 machines?

The "net start" command shows the server running as 
"SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)", but this test always fails under NC_NET.

Any help appreciated.
