Monitor remote server over the internet

I am sure there are many ways to accomplish this,
the method you proposed looks ok to me,
However shouldn't security should be thought of first if your sending over
the internet as opposed to behind your firewall.
Other suggestions may include looking into
check_by_ssl (Although I never tried this)
NRPE (which should support encription)
NC_NEt (using passive checks and setting up external NSCA and encription)
Setting up a remote Nagios server at the client site (it does not need to be
a new server with fast processor for only a few hosts) then VPN it to your
Nagios host.
