Hmmm, I don't think that's the case. Wouldn't this show it:
nagios at cn2://etc/nagios2/conf.d$ ps aux |grep nagios
nagios 30699 0.0 0.6 22096 3364 ? SNsl Sep19 6:53
/usr/sbin/nagios2 -d /etc/nagios2/nagios.cfg
nagios 29497 0.0 0.1 2528 1016 pts/0 S 10:25 0:00 su -s
/bin/bash - nagios
nagios 29498 0.0 0.3 3268 1868 pts/0 S 10:25 0:00 -su
nagios 3034 0.0 0.1 2216 884 pts/0 R+ 12:55 0:00 ps aux
nagios 3035 0.0 0.1 1644 556 pts/0 S+ 12:55 0:00 grep
nagios
nagios at cn2://etc/nagios2/conf.d$
I think the only instance of Nagios is PID 30699.
Thanks for your suggestion.

These symptoms are consistent with having multiple nagios daemons
running at the same time.
