check_snmp and negative numbers.

I'm trying to use check_snmp to look at light values on fiber
comnnections measured in dBM. The values are negative.
When I run check_snmp on them I get positive values.

I don't mind working with positive values with warn /critical setting,
but it would be nice to know if check_snmp will always convert negative
to positive or if
in the future, negative values will be allowed and all my fiber
connectios will go critical??

Thanks.
