If I run the same command with my number instead of $pager$ I receive a
SMS. Therefore I assume that it must be the $pager$ part that is wrong??

If that is the precise command line you used for manually testing, it
will fail because $PAGER$ (and the others) have no meaning for the
shell. The idea was to substitute in the appropriate values for those
variables for you test.
