Hi,
I've written another plugin called check_gentoo_portage which allows
you to monitor Security Updates on Gentoo systems, thereby integrating
your security patching information in to Nagios. It will alert if there
are any outstanding security updates that haven't been applied to a system.
It also tests the age of the Portage tree since security updates are
dependent on this.
It can also tell you the age of the Portage tree and how many general
package updates available (there is also a switch to alert on any
general package upgrades as this was a feature request but it's not the
default behaviour as most people won't want to do this).
There are various customization switches, see --help for full details.
You can get the plugin from NagiosExchange here:
http://www.nagiosexchange.org/Check_Plugins.21.0.html?&tx_netnagext_pi1[p_view]=1244
I've found this to be very effective across a range of servers and much
better than having a locally run glsa script mail you as this is more
controlled, more reliable and easily trackable/referenced with a Nagios
interface, I actually found 2 instances at a remote site where a cronned
glsa script had failed to inform me of security patches due to local mta
failure.
I can't believe I didn't write this sooner, a must have for all those
using Gentoo I think. Thanks to Matthias Kellermann for the original idea.
All feedback is of course welcome at this email address.
