Replacing check_ssh with check_by_ssh?

Currently, check_ssh appears to only check for a banner/listening port.
Would a more proper check be to use check_by_ssh to execute say, `/bin/true`
for example?
# check_by_ssh -H {host} -C /bin/true -l {nagiosuser}
Has anyone on the list done this and had good results?
Thank you,
-RT
