Build environment diff

Got it - I've patched most compiler warnings with the flags 
previously present in the Makefile.  They seem to generate more 
warnings, although the extras they produce aren't that helpful or 
meaningful.  Most cleanup patches should be applied as of tonight's 
CVS commit.
