setting up distributed servers

I'm trying to setup a distributed server. Do I need to define contacts and
contract groups on the distributed server? Seems like you wouldn't need to
but when I try to start nagios it bitches that I've not defined any. Guess I
was figuring that with enable_notifications set to 0, it wouldn't care but
it seems to..
 
I'm a little confused as to what .cfg files you need to setup on the
distributed server.. I realize the services and hosts need to be
configured.. and thus the hostgroups probably. But some of the others like
the two above seem unnecessary. Though it appears not?
