RRDtool integration

Hi

Has anybody used RRDTool data for the service of nagios. Actually on the
monitoring server, there are many softwares running for monitoring like
MRTG,Smokeping,Nagios. This causes a lot of load on CPU while hosts are
checked redundantly from nagios,smokeping. Smokeping also pings every host
at some intervals. It uses RRD tool to store its information.
If the information stored in RRD can be used by nagios ping services ,
then a lot of load can be reduced on the server.
Has anybody done that before or some useful suggestions.
