Authentication question

Hello
 
I just installed NAGIOS and are at the point to set authentication.

Is this step necessary at all to successfully run Nagios? In my
environment I would not really need authentication ...!
 
If I would skip the authentication process - will I need still need to
set the cgi permissions or can I manually chmod the cgi files? 
 
I am on Red Hat 8.0. The local installed web site is already up and
running but I have not configured anything yet.
