How does Nagios determine that a host recovers?

Hi all,
This may be one of those questions that has a painfully obvious answer, but 
I can't find it after checking documentation - How does nagios determine 
that a host has recovered? If a host is in a critical or unreachable state, 
Nagios stops doing service checks, right? Am I missing the obvious here?
