yup. doesn't make sense but is easy to get around.
here is my service template entry:
# Service definition for Windows Events
define service {
name WindowsEvent
use generic-service
is_volatile 1
check_period none
check_command check-host-alive
max_check_attempts 1
service_description Windows Event
contact_groups ServerAdmins,OperationsTech-NonCritical
register 0
}

Subject: [Nagios-users] Confusion over service definitions for passive
checks
Hi, Folks,
I'm working on setting up some passive checks, and have run into a point of
confusion.
As I understand the docs, I *must* have a service definition for each
passive
check, and each service definition must specify a command. And therin lies
the problem; what sort of command should be specified for a passive check?
It makes no sense to me. Given that the check is passive, nagios has no
need to execute a command.
Do I instead make some sort of reference to the external command file?
Your assistance is greatly appreciated, as this is boggling my poor
little brain. :)
Thank you,
John
