check_nagios can't find running process

I am unable to use external web commands due to a check_nagios returning 
a "can't find running process" error.
I have confirmed nagios is indeed running and 
 /usr/local/nagios/var/status.log exists, is being updated, and the 
directories have the proper permissions.

I have also straced check_nagios and do not get any errors when it opens 
and reads /usr/local/nagios/var/status.log.

Does anyone have any ideas on why check_nagios is returning this error?
