check_nagios can't find running process

Ok this one seems odd because it should return properly exactly the way you typed
that :\ I'm pretty sure you already mentioned this but have you verified
permissions on all the files and or checked ownership etc.

on a side note ... on one of my linux machines I found I had to remove the single
quotes from the /usr/local/nagios/var/status.log portion of the check command in
cgi.conf.
