Freshness check as an all-clear?

I had an idea for what seems like a novel use of freshness checks, and I
thought I'd see if anyone else has tried it. I've got a number of passive
checks that only send error conditions; consequently, they're always shown
as critical in nagios. I had an idea of using freshness checks with maybe a
10 minute threshold or so, that when tripped would call a script that
returned an "OK" value and a message like "no error messaged received in the
last 10 minutes". Has anyone tried this? I am a bit leery because of
latency creep problems I've had on my central server for freshness checks.
