All depend,

This apply for a server with one CPU.

"The load average numbers give the average number of jobs in the run queue for the last 5 seconds, the last 30 seconds, and the last 60 seconds.

>From the command output, you can determine whether the load is increasing or decreasing. An acceptable load average depends on your type of system and how it is being used. In general, for a large system, a load of 10 is high, and a load of 3 is low." (Thru Performance Manual)

So if you have a server with more than one CPU the queue of 10 is not so high, however you can't consider that 20 is high for 2 Cup's because 2 CPU must attend the run process fast and do not permit the queue getting up. there are not a formula to calculate a exactly number but if you evaluate the moment whit additional measurements how %CPU and %memory, wheh this parameters going to 0 you will get a number that means your system is load.

Asunto: [Nagios-users] Question about check load plugin.

Hi.

Check_load measure load of system in last 1, 5, 15 minutes,
isn't it?
But what does mean load?
Wchich level of load is warning level or critical level? Default
values of this plugin is 15,10,5 for warning and 30,25,20 for
critical.
Load (from uptime command) from my prior server
is:2.59,1.91,1.40. Is this hard?
Explain me, please. Thanks.
