what is interval between check attempts?

Hi,

in my hosts.cfg I have:

    max_check_attempts 10 
    check_command   check-host-alive

If nagios is unable to ping the host, what determines the interval
between the 10 check attempts? I am wondering how long a host needs
to be 'down'  before I get an alert.
