All I can say is DOH!
Sorry Andrew, the status wasn't changing because of a typo in assigning
the exit code. V1.4 fixed this.
You can test with:
./check_mssql.sh hostname user pw ; echo $?
It normally should echo 0.
If you give an invalid user, pw or server it will echo 2.
